Jonathan Reuven “J.R.” Rotem is a South African American record producer, songwriter, and music executive whose credits span pop, R&B, and hip-hop. A classically trained pianist, he began his career with placements for Destiny’s Child and 50 Cent before achieving international success with hits including Rihanna’s “SOS,” Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls,” Jason Derulo’s “Whatcha Say” and “In My Head,” Iyaz’s “Replay,” and Fall Out Boy’s “Centuries.” Many of these records topped the Billboard Hot 100 and earned multi-platinum certifications.
In 2006, Rotem co-founded the label and production company Beluga Heights with Zach Katz and Tommy Rotem, combining artist development with major-label partnerships. The imprint discovered Sean Kingston and developed Jason Derulo, generating a run of global singles and helping launch long-term careers.
Rotem’s industry honors include BMI’s Producer of the Year (2009) and Songwriter of the Year (2011). Beyond artist development, he has contributed music for television, including Empire, and produced tracks for artists such as Gwen Stefani on This Is What the Truth Feels Like. Today he continues to balance studio production, A&R, and publishing, standing as a defining producer of the 2000s–2010s era with a continuing impact on today’s music landscape.
