MUSICBIRD COMPLETES THIRD DEAL IN SIX MONTHS WITH MUSIC FROM LEGENDARY BAND SUPERTRAMP
MusicBird announces its third investment in just six months with the catalogue of Scottish musician Dougie Thomson, bassist of the iconic band Supertramp. The deal includes the master royalty income from all of Thomson’s recordings with Supertramp, including hits such as ‘Goodbye Stranger’, ‘Give a Little Bit’ and ‘Breakfast in America’.
Reflecting its focus on targeted and efficient dealmaking, MusicBird’s latest transaction follows recent agreements with Canadian hitmaking duo Majid Jordan and the estate of legendary Grunge producer Rick Parashar. It also adds further income and genre diversification to its growing portfolio of proven hits.
Formed in 1970, Supertramp was a British rock band which found worldwide success with its distinctive progressive rock sound. Overall, the band has sold over 60 million albums, reaching Gold and Platinum status in numerous countries, particularly across Europe and North America. These recordings have collectively generated billions of global streams, underlining their continued popularity decades later.
Dougie Thomson was a member of Supertramp’s classic lineup and remained an integral part of the band for seven albums over 15 years up until 1988. He contributed to a string of landmark records, including Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments…, and Breakfast in America. The latter became one of the best-selling albums of all time, winning two Grammy Awards, while its lead single ‘The Logical Song’ received the 1979 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically.
Paul Brown, CEO of MusicBird, said: “We have ambitious growth plans and are continuing to build momentum, converting our deal pipeline, while staying true to our investment strategy with a laser focus on brilliant music. With enduring global popularity spanning more than half a century, Dougie’s catalogue further diversifies our collection of music rights across different eras and geographies, as well as bringing the weight of truly stratospheric commercial success to our collection.
As an integral part of one of the most successful bands of all time, his career is a rare combination of creative impact, longevity and cultural influence at the highest level of popular music. Supertramp’s music continues to find new fans and opportunities for success, and we are excited to be part of that ongoing journey.”
Jonas Anker, Co-Founder and Chairman of MusicBird added: “It fills me with pride to see this deal announced – one of the most enduring bodies of work in the history of popular music. These are true evergreen songs that have moved generations of listeners worldwide, and we are honored to be their stewards.”
Dougie Thomson said: “I am immensely proud of the music I recorded with Supertramp and am grateful that so many people are still listening to and discovering it now. The MusicBird team has genuine care for this music, along with the experience and expertise to manage it. I trust that they are the right partner to look after my catalogue moving forward.”
